W-E-P-L 97.1 FM EL PODER LATINO/LATINO POWER EMBRACED BY LISTENERS HERE AT HOME AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY THROUGH LIVE STREAM
Rochester, New York – WEPL 97.1FM marks its one year anniversary in Rochester today. The dual-language radio station, which is owned and operated by the Ibero American Action League, was founded as an educational resource for all residents in Monroe County. Radio programming is provided in both English and Spanish and consists of two weekly shows (business show and news hour), education capsules, and underwriting spots secured by organizations and businesses.
“The mission of our radio station is two-fold: Naturally, we are focused on providing important information about health, education, civic engagement and other topics to Latino consumers. It’s also important for us to be inclusive and include non-Latinos in our outreach efforts as we do serve people of all ethnic backgrounds. Our weekly shows include guests from various organizations and businesses that are given the opportunity to share their knowledge and expertise with our listeners,” says Ibero President & CEO Hilda Rosario Escher.
In the past year, guests have included representatives from Pike, Paychex, Wegmans, and LaBella Associates.
Ibero was awarded an FCC license in early 2015 after years of research, meetings and work conducted by Escher, Ibero’s Chief Operations Officer Gladys Pedraza-Burgos, and Nemesio Martinez, a well-known community advocate and a host on the radio station.
“The radio station has a general manager and a team of volunteers who generously give their time and talents to make Poder 97.1 a success. Our deejays and hosts do this without hesitation because of the longstanding need and request for a Latin radio station in this community,” says Pedraza-Burgos.
The hard work is paying off as both listeners and major companies have signed on as supporters and underwriters. Poder 97.1 streams live on the Tunein.com app and has prompted listeners from Texas, Florida and even Brazil to contact the station about their support. Additionally, major companies in the fields of healthcare, education, finance, and other areas have also come on board as underwriters.
“There’s a growing trend across the country to establish new resources that provide valuable information to the Hispanic market. A Latino market the size of Rochester has been in need of a radio station for decades and demand is high,” says Poder’s General Manager Julio Saenz.
Saenz brings a wealth of cross country media experience, most recently as the former general manager of Mundo Hispanico, a bilingual newspaper under the Atlanta Journal Constitution and affiliate of Cox Communications. Saenz was also the general manager of Excelsior in Los Angeles and the founder and general manager of Conexion, Rochester’s first bilingual publication. The successful publication was eventually bought by the Democrat and Chronicle. Saenz works in collaboration with Ibero’s chief operations officer and the Office of Development and Communications.
Established in 1968, Ibero is a dual-language human services agency that builds stronger families and greater self-sufficiency among individuals and families of all ethnic backgrounds. Our Early Childhood Center now serves as a national model because of its accomplishments, which include a parent engagement rate of 95 percent.
