IBERO’S SAFE SUMMER FAMILY FIELD DAY COMBATS SUBSTANCE USE AND STRIVES FOR AN ADDICTION-FREE ROCHESTER ALONGSIDE CHIEF MIKE CIMINELLI AND RPD/RFD
Local leaders and community partners will come together at Baden Park (581 Upper Falls Blvd) from 11am-3pm this Friday, July 21 to raise awareness and address drug/alcohol use in Rochester. Amidst alarming national and local trends showing prescription drug and opiate use on the rise, the need for a unified front in prevention and treatment is greater than ever. Heroin overdoses have been steadily increasing, and drug overdoses have surged past motor vehicles as a leading cause of death nationwide.
Ibero’s PAO program under the Youth Services Division, Rochester Police, Rochester Fire Department, Operation Safe Child, MVP Healthcare, the Girl Scouts, and other community partners will join forces Friday to highlight the work that is being done against drug and alcohol use, stress the need for continued efforts in prevention and treatment, and promote healthy alternatives in one fun-filled family event. The Department of Parks and Recreation along with several city recreation centers will organize yoga, basketball, baseball, and other sports activities. A smoke house and false fire alarms will be set off by the Rochester Fire Department to practice fire safety while Ibero’s own El Poder Latino/Latino Power 97.1 FM broadcasts live from the event all day. A variety of vendors will be on-site as well as representatives from Ibero’s event partners/sponsors.
More than 200 people attended last year and Ibero hopes to draw even greater crowds this year. Safe Summer is free to the general public and perfect for families looking for an active summer afternoon. Kids between the ages 7-18 are encouraged to participate in all activities and learn about how to maintain healthy and active lifestyles.
